At Willow Creek Kennels and Hunting we intensively manage our property for pheasants,
ruffed grouse and woodcock. We spring release Manchurian Hens to add to our wild population.
We live trap year round for raccoons, skunks, and opossum to provide the
best nesting environment we can. We slow release 8-12 week old pheasants out of our recall pen during the summer. These birds will gradually become acclimated to there environment giving them a better chance of survival.
Our hunting operation has year round management, providing our hunters with a truly wild experience.
Our cover is designed for Pointers and Flushers. By broadcast seeding sorghum and corn, the birds are less apt to run, and therefore hold better for the dogs.
Good portions of the cover we hunt are fields which have not been farmed for twenty years. With aspen, birch, willow brush, and many other pioneer species beginning to take hold, this makes great cover for the birds.
We have planted fruit bearing shrubs and pines which also provide great food value and winter cover.
We have large fields, over 80 acres each, which provide each hunter with plenty of room to move around. We have always believed quality is much more important than quantity.
We have clear cut sections of mature growth, thus removing perch trees for Avian Predators. We have left these trees were they fall providing additional cover for the birds. This stimulates pioneer species, mainly aspen, to regenerate. This is ideal ruffed grouse habitat, and offers our upland hunters an
opportunity at ruffed grouse, woodcock, and pheasant all in the same day.
Our Pheasant Hunts are roosters only. We have a good population of
wild pheasants established, and passing on the hens is a
very important part of our management plan.
We've added quail hunts during September, October
and November. Chad has guided quail hunts for five years at an Orvis Endorsed Lodge in Illinois, and has brought a similar hunt to Minnesota. Experience a southern style quail hunt in the heart of the north country.
